The British Music Embassy was the backdrop for a series of sessions about trust, privacy, neuroscience and other topics in the first UK brand and marketing day at the SXSW festival.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promoted and participated in the festival held in Austin, Texas, from 8 – 17 March 2019, with content curated by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), with support from the Advertising Association (AA).

The SXSW is an annual event that brings together companies and individuals from the music, film and interactive media industries and is estimated to attract up to 300,000 visitors. The event aims to benefit participants by allowing them to network and socially interact with other participants, entrepreneurs and investors as well as showcase their own skills, talents and innovations. In particular, it aims to discover new talent.

During the brand and marketing day, speakers included executives at agencies such as Crowd, Karmarama, BBH and Elvis, as well as advertising research specialists, System 1.

The speakers discussed a variety of views on how brands could become more transparent, how consumers could become more confident their data privacy was being respected, and on how brands could both have more effective advertising and treat consumers in a more personalised way.

In addition to the brand day, the UK was also represented at the festival by a DIT exhibition stand, receptions, other networking opportunities, guides and other information.

Crowd CEO Jamie Sergeant posted about the festival: "SXSW is a great opportunity for me, to network with likeminded and inspirational entrepreneurs; making links across the seas is what keeps this industry thriving!

"Having the opportunity to talk at the event is also a great chance to share the expertise of Crowd, and to spread the message of what can be achieved through international exportation. Do come down to the British Music Embassy later today."

The British Music Embassy also returned to the 2019 SXSW Music Festival to present official showcases for its 12th year. These showcases were presented in partnership with AIM, BBC Music, BPI, DIT, PPL and PRS for Music. As in years past, the showcases highlighted the best up and coming British musical talent.

Acts included Sports Team, LUCIA, Ezra Collective, Grace Carter, The Blinders, Boy Azooga, APRE, Easy Life, and Celeste.
