London is world's top tourism destination

The respected Mastercard Global Cities Index has ranked London ahead of Paris and Bangkok as the world's top tourism destination with an estimated 19m visitors projected for 2014.

The Index ranks 132 cities in terms of their total international visitor arrivals and cross-border spending.

Major cultural events,such as blockbuster exhibitions, together with a wealth of sporting and culinary highlights, helped attract over 16m international visitors in 2013 - the highest number recorded by the Office of National Statistics International Passenger Survey


During 2014, the capital is expected to host museum shows about the Ming Dynasty, Rembrandt and Constable, as well as events about the art of the First World War, Sherlock Holmes and the Thames River Festival.
