UK television exports IN 2018/9
The UK Television Exports Report estimated total revenue from the international sale of UK TV programmes and associated activities was £1.4bn in 2018/9, up 7 per cent over the previous year.
The USA remained the largest market for UK TV exports, worth £444m in 2018/9 - equivalent to 38 per cent of all UK TV exports. It was followed by France (£115m) and Australia (£96m).
The Nordics were worth £85m of sales with the Worldwide Pan-Territory category generating £58m and reporting the most accelerated growth.
- Middle East & North Africa and Latin America reported revenue increases of 28 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.
- UK TV industry executives have identified India, China and Latin America as markets with the best potential for future growth for UK exporters.
OTHER KEY FINDINGS IN THE REPORT INCLUDE:
- Exports of finished programmes accounted for 69 per cent of total sales, with sales of formats remaining stable at £47m and US format sales growing from £9m to £20m.
- Drama (such as The Bodyguard series) dominated TV sales, followed by factual (e.g. Blue Earth II) and entertainment (e.g. Love Island)
